How can I become a US Citizen?

To become a U.S. citizen, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  1. Be at least 18 years old at the time of filing the naturalization application.

  2. Be a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for at least 5 years, or for at least 3 years if you are married to a U.S. citizen and have been living with your spouse for the past 3 years.

  3. Be physically present in the United States for at least half of the time during the required residency period.

  4. Have resided for at least 3 months in the state or USCIS district where you plan to file the naturalization application.

  5. Demonstrate continuous residence in the United States since becoming a lawful permanent resident.

  6. Be able to read, write, and speak basic English.

  7. Have knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government.

  8. Be a person of good moral character.


If you meet the eligibility requirements, you can apply for U.S. citizenship by filing Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
