DON'T USE IT: Photocopy of Your Green Card

Lost your green card and waiting for a replacement? Don't reach for the photocopier just yet! Here's why:

Not All Situations Accept Copies:

  • Daily Use: While some everyday situations might accept a photocopy for ID (think stores), it's always best to check first.

  • Traveling Abroad: Forget photocopies for international trips! You'll need your original green card or a valid travel document.

  • Work Verification: Employers usually require original documents like green cards for Form I-9. A copy won't do.

  • Official Business: Government agencies and official transactions often need your original green card. Check their specific procedures if unsure.

What Can You Use Instead?

  • Green Card Application Receipt: Carry a copy of your green card application receipt notice (Form I-797C) as proof you're waiting for a replacement.

Remember: Originals are always best! Avoid delays and hassles by carrying them whenever possible. If unsure, consult an immigration attorney for specific guidance.
