Faster Employment Authorization with USCIS

Great news for refugees arriving in the US! According to a recent update from USCIS, obtaining employment authorization just got a whole lot faster.

Here's what's changed:

  • Faster Processing: USCIS has streamlined the process for issuing Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) to refugees. This means a wait time of around 30 days, compared to several months previously!

  • Automatic Application: Refugees admitted to the US on or after December 10, 2023, will automatically be enrolled in this new process. No need to submit a separate application for an EAD.

  • Faster Delivery: Once approved, you'll typically receive your EAD within 1-2 weeks by mail.

How it Works:

  • USCIS electronically creates a Form I-765 for you upon arrival and begins processing it right away.

  • Once approved, USCIS mails your EAD and electronically sends your information to the Social Security Administration (SSA) for a Social Security number and card.

Important Notes:

  • This streamlined process applies only to refugees admitted at the time of their initial entry, not those joining family members later (following-to-join).

  • Renewals or replacements of EADs still require filing Form I-765.

  • Allow up to 30 days for delivery after approval.

A Step Forward in Refugee Integration:

USCIS recognizes the importance of EADs and Social Security cards for newly arrived refugees. This new, collaborative effort with the SSA aims to streamline the process and support refugee integration into American society.
