Expired Green Card & Working

Green card expired but renewal pending (Form I-90)? Here’s how you can still work legally:

  • Apply for an EAD (Employment Authorization Document): This temporary work permit allows you to work while your green card renewal is processed (Form I-765).

  • Eligibility: You’ll need a pending Form I-90, a reason for needing the EAD, and meet general work authorization requirements.

  • The Application Process: File Form I-765 with USCIS along with required documents and fees. Apply soon after your green card renewal to avoid gaps in work authorization.

  • EAD Validity: The EAD will have a specific validity period. Follow USCIS instructions for renewal or extension if needed.

  • Important Note: An expired green card itself is not a valid travel document or proof of permanent residency. Don’t use it for re-entry into the U.S.
