Green Card Renewal Abroad

Green card expired while you’re outside the U.S.? Renewals are tricky abroad, but here are your options:

  • Returning Resident Visa (SB-1): Applies if you’ve been gone over a year due to unforeseen circumstances. Obtain this at a U.S. embassy/consulate.

  • Renew Upon Return: If your return is imminent, wait to renew until you’re back in the U.S. Use Form I-90 then.

  • Emergency Travel Document: For urgent travel with an expired card, contact the U.S. embassy/consulate for a temporary document to return home and renew later.

  • Reentry Permit (Before Travel): If your card is valid and you plan a long stay abroad, apply for a reentry permit (Form I-131) before leaving. This allows you to return without jeopardizing your green card status.

Remember: Each situation is unique. Consult an immigration attorney for personalized advice based on your specific circumstances.
