Applying for Advance Parole

Traveling abroad with a pending green card application (Form I-485) or other temporary immigration benefits? An Advance Parole document can ensure a smooth return to the US without jeopardizing your application. Here's a breakdown of the process:

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

  • Advance Parole is generally for those with a pending Form I-485 or specific temporary benefits like DACA or TPS. Verify your eligibility on the USCIS website.

Step 2: Download and Complete Form I-131

  • Head to the USCIS website and download Form I-131, Application for Travel Document.

  • Read the instructions thoroughly to understand the requirements and gather necessary information.

Step 3: Collect Supporting Documents

  • Include documents that support your Form I-485 receipt notice or evidence of your pending benefit application.

  • Provide additional documents explaining your travel purpose (e.g., itinerary, employment letter, family documents).

Step 4: Check and Pay the Application Fee

  • Verify the current filing fee for Form I-131 on the USCIS website.

  • Include the correct payment (check or money order payable to U.S. Department of Homeland Security) with your application.

Step 5: Biometrics Appointment (if applicable)

  • USCIS might require capturing your fingerprints and photograph. If so, follow the instructions in the appointment notice.

Step 6: Mail Your Application

  • Send the completed Form I-131, supporting documents, and fee to the USCIS Lockbox facility designated in the instructions.

  • Use a reliable mailing service and keep a copy of your application for your records.

Step 7: Track Your Application

  • USCIS will send a receipt notice acknowledging your application.

  • Attend any scheduled biometrics appointments.

  • Use the USCIS Case Status tool online to monitor your application progress.

Step 8: Await Approval

  • USCIS will process your application and send a decision notice.

  • If approved, you'll receive the Advance Parole document by mail.

Step 9: Plan Your Trip

  • Once you have the Advance Parole, plan your international travel accordingly.

  • Ensure your return to the US happens before the document's expiration date.
