Mayorkas Extends TPS for Somalia
Good news for Somalis living in the U.S.
The U.S. government has decided to extend and redesignate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalia for another 18 months. This means that Somalis already living in the U.S. can stay and work legally until March 17, 2026.
Why the extension?
The decision was made because of the ongoing dangerous situation in Somalia, with things like war, violence, and natural disasters making it unsafe for people to return home.
What does this mean for Somalis in the U.S.?
Current TPS holders: You need to re-register to keep your TPS.
New arrivals: If you're from Somalia and arrived in the U.S. before July 12, 2024, you might be eligible for TPS.
Students: There's special help for Somali students with F-1 visas.
Important Dates:
Re-registration for current TPS holders: July 22, 2024, to September 20, 2024.
New TPS applications: You can apply from July 22, 2024, to March 17, 2026.

Remember: Even with TPS, the U.S. government is still enforcing immigration laws. If you don't have a legal right to be in the U.S., you could be removed.
